SAMANTHA WATERS: SHEET SERIES

Join us on Saturday October 26th from 2-4pm to celebrate the launch of ‘Sheet Series’ by Samantha Waters.

The exhibition will be available to view by appointment and online from October 25th-November 10th, pre-launch sales are also welcome. RSVP not essential but helps us with an idea of numbers on the day.

Samantha Waters is an Australian contemporary artist based on Wadawurrung Country in Geelong.

Samantha's distinctive technique involves manipulating fabric and plaster to create shapes reminiscent of draped or rumpled sheets, inviting viewers to reflect on the raw beauty in moments of imperfection and disarray.

Her sculptures, which often suggest the lingering presence of human interaction, are both tactile and atmospheric, capturing a sense of stillness and tension. Through her innovative use of materials, she transforms soft, familiar textiles into hardened forms, creating a dialogue between fragility and permanence.

Annie Smithers is one of Australia's most highly regarded chefs and one of the first to truly epitomise the paddock-to-plate ethos. Her restaurant du Fermier, in the small village of Trentham, features a menu du jour based on classic French farmhouse cooking, using vegetables harvested that day from her kitchen garden and local meats and poultry. Annie has written two cookbooks and writes for The Saturday Paper fortnightly. Her first memoir, Recipe for a Kinder Life, published in 2021.

About Colin Chee & Elizabeth Price:

Colin Chee is the creator and founder of Never Too Small.

Feeling regretful about his purchase of a badly designed shoe box studio, the size of 3 and a half car park spaces, filmmaker Colin Chee decided to leverage his situation by documenting well-designed small spaces into a YouTube series in hopes of gaining free advice from professional designers, which eventually evolved into Never Too Small, a dynamic media company showcasing innovative small-scale architectural and interior design projects, offering insights and inspiration for compact living spaces and sustainable design.

Never Too Small was born out of a desire to make living in small spaces better. From humble beginnings as a YouTube channel, Never Too Small has grown into a modern media company that shares knowledge and inspiration for better small footprint living with a growing global audience across its YouTube series, its limited documentary series, its multiple broadcast television series, its multiple books and its series of digital guides. A desire to share and inspire continues to be at the core of all things Never Too Small as it increasingly assumes the role of advocate; actively championing more creative, considered and sustainable ways to design and live.

Never Too Small’s content has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Magazine, the Guardian and Elle Decor, and Colin Chee, Never Too Small’s creator and creative director, has been invited to speak at events around the world. Colin and his core team are based in Melbourne, Australia, but are supported by a talented and highly valued team of international collaborators. Together they share a vision for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future for our cities in which small footprint design and thinking play a central role.

MATTHEW EVANS & PAULETTE WHITNEY IN CONVERSATION

MATTHEW EVANS & PAULETTE WHITNEY IN CONVERSATION

We are overjoyed to be welcoming two food superstars from Tasmania/Lutruwita, Matthew Evans and Paulette Whitney, to the studio on Thursday August 15th to celebrate the release of their new books. Matthew and Paulette will be in conversation with journalist, podcaster and director of the Sorrento Writers Festival, Corrie Perkin.

Matthew Evans is the founder of Fat Pig Farm, a food activist, regenerative farmer, chef, and media presenter who has written fifteen books on food and farming. His latest is MILK: The truth, the lies, and the unbelievable story of the original superfood. Matthew is renowned for breaking down complex discussions about controversial food and sustainability issues and making them compellingly relevant. A fervent believer in knowing and trusting what we eat, Matthew is as much a food activist as he is an innovator in the space.

Paulette Whitney is one of Australia’s unsung food heroes, revered by high-profile Australian growers and foodies while quietly flying under the radar. A Tasmanian market gardener & grower who runs Provenance Growers, propagating seeds, and growing plants that she sells online and at the weekly Salamanca Farmers’ Market in Hobart. Her veg has a cult following and she deserves to be celebrated.

Her first book, Broccoli and Other Love Stories is a celebration of fifty food plants with recipes, arranged into chapters by plant family and chosen because Paulette grows, cooks, and eats them regularly, with accessibility front of mind (many being suitable for container gardens for urban cooks, and most being available at grocers in temperate regions around the world) but also including a few curiosities to keep things interesting. Paulette is a beautiful writer (you will fall in love with broccoli!) and the stunning photography is shot through the seasons and celebrates the bounty.

We are so thrilled to be able to welcome them both to the studio on Thursday August 15th for a discussion about food, farming, their new books and many other topics. Tickets include a glass of local wine, shared grazing platter and maybe one or two other surprise special treats.

Our local indie bookshop The Book Bird will be on hand with books available to purchase and have signed on the night.

Date: Thursday August 15th
Time: 6pm doors open, for 6.30pm start
Location: THE KO, 1/14 Lambert Avenue, Newtown VIC 3220
Tickets: $30, includes local wine and cheese

Matthew Evans is a chef and food critic turned farmer-food activist. He lives on a mixed farm that occupies a one-time apple orchard in the Huon Valley outside Hobart.

He is nationally best known for his long-running SBS series Gourmet Farmer, set on Fat Pig Farm's 70 acres. He has authored or coauthored 15 books on food, and is regularly interviewed on radio about all things to do with farming, growing, soil and eating.

Paulette Whitney lives with her family on a pocket of land in the foothills of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington, south of Nipaluna/Hobart.

With her farmer/chef husband Matt, she grows seedlings, vegetables and seed crops. They make pickles and preserves and sell their harvest at Salamanca Market. Through their work they have nurtured relationships with herbalists, gardeners, chefs and botanists who teach them every time they talk.

Paulette can't abide wasting food, and she knows how to look for a dozen ways to use the produce that finds its way into her kitchen.

‘I really enjoyed the Kohl Studios make up class at The KO last weekend. It was a small intimate class that was the perfect balance between fun and productive. Ashlea was absolutely lovely and made a big effort to check in on everyone individually throughout the class. I loved learning new and easy techniques that made me feel confident when applying my make up. A really lovely afternoon with friends that I would definitely do again!’

‘I absolutely loved Ashlea’s make up class at The KO. I learnt new skills and felt more confident and comfortable doing my own make up. She sold products on the day which was perfect as I wanted to purchase what she showcased. Ashlea’s down to earth personality & natural make up style was inspiring, I would definitely do another class in the future. It’s a really fun class to do with girlfriends & then book a dinner after to show off your new make up looks!!

AN EVENING WITH DR NORMAN SWAN AND CORRIE PERKIN

AN EVENING WITH DR NORMAN SWAN AND CORRIE PERKIN

An evening in conversation with Dr Norman Swan & Corrie Perkin to celebrate the release of ‘So You Want To Know What’s Good For Your Kids?’ This book is the ultimate parenting guide, cutting through to what matters most in raising a healthy, resilient child from birth to age ten.

This event is presented in collaboration with The Book Bird who will have books available to purchase and have signed on the night.

When: Wednesday July 31st, 6pm-8pm

Where: The KO Creative Studio, 1/14 Lambert Avenue, Newtown

Cost: Tickets are $30 and includes a glass of wine, non-alcoholic drinks and cheese.

About the book:

We all want our kids to grow into happy, healthy adults and the first ten years count more than any other time in our lives. So what should we be doing to give them the best chance? Most books on childhood stop at age five and start again in adolescence. They miss the critical primary school age years leading to adolescence - the years that make all the difference.

With a background in paediatrics and an over thirty-year career monitoring and broadcasting the latest medical research, Dr Norman Swan fills that gap. He has unparalleled experience in delivering straight- talking, honest, unbiased and commonsense health information. Norman Swan knows what issues parents are worried about throughout childhood. Drawing on the questions he hears time and again, in this book he gives you the information you want and the answers you need to raise healthy and happy children, with a particular focus on the crucial years of five to ten - the runway to adolescence.

So You Want to Know What's Good for Your Kids? is a one-stop handbook that you can trust to clear away all the unnecessary advice, allowing you to focus on what makes the difference for kids. Norman Swan replaces myths, half-truths and misconceptions with practical knowledge on topics that parents agonise about - including sleep, diet, school refusal, screens, social media, what genetics determine and what you can and can't change, anxiety, ADHD and much, much more. This book will help you focus on the decisions that can make your kids the best they can be.

About the Author:

Trained in paediatrics, Dr Norman Swan was one of the first medically qualified journalists in Australia, with a broadcast career spanning more than 30 years. He currently hosts Radio National's The Health Report and co-hosts What’s That Rash. During the pandemic he co-hosted the hugely popular Coronacast. He is also a reporter on ABC’s 7.30 and a reporter and commentator on other television and radio news outlets. In addition to being an active journalist and health broadcaster, Dr Swan pursues his commitment to children as a long standing board member of the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY). He was also the co-founder of Tonic Media Network and the Aboriginal Health Television Network, health channels which play in GP and Aboriginal Medical Service waiting rooms. He is the bestselling author of So You Think You Know What's Good for You? and So You Want to Live Younger Longer?

JUNE BOOK CLUB: THE WORK

JUNE BOOK CLUB: THE WORK

Join us each month for Book Club. All are welcome.
The title we’ve selected for June is ‘The Work’ by Bri Lee.

Sessions commence at 6pm until 7.30 and include wine, non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks.

We encourage you to pick up a copy of the book from our fave Geelong indie bookshop, The Book Bird, they will happily offer you a 10% discount for our selected title in store.

A stunning debut novel about art, power, love and money from the acclaimed and bestselling author of Eggshell Skull.

About The Work:

Lally has invested everything into her gallery in Manhattan and the sacrifices are finally paying off. Pat is a scholarship boy desperate to establish himself in Sydney's antiquities scene. When they meet at New York's Armory Show their chemistry is instant - fighting about art and politics is just foreplay.

With an ocean between them they try to get back to work, but they're each struggling to balance money and ambition with the love of art that first drew them to their strange industry. Lally is a kingmaker, bringing exciting new talent to the world, so what's the problem if it's also making her rich? Pat can barely pay his rent and he isn't sure if he's taking advantage of his clients or if they are taking advantage of him, and which would be worse? Their international affair ebbs and flows like the market, while their aspirations and insecurities are driving them both towards career-ending mistakes.

If love costs and art takes, what price do we pay for wanting it all? The Work is about the biggest intersections of life: of art and commerce, of intimacy and distance, of talent and entitlement, and of labour and privilege. Dazzling, funny and unforgettable, it is an epic and forensic exploration of modern love and passion, politics and power. The Work announces a brilliant new voice in Australian fiction.

Praise for The Work:

'This novel isn't just good; it's superb. Assured, and powerful, and intelligent, and very, VERY hard to put down. I consumed it in a passion.' – Annabel Crabb

'Smart, witty and super steamy, The Work oozes intelligence and pulses with energy. I devoured it!' – Emily Maguire

'A completely exhilarating, powerful, mesmerising novel, filled with ALL my favourite things: sex, art and New York City.' – Jessie Tu

'A glamorous and dirty capitalist fever dream … complex, opulent and horny.' – Ella Baxter

'Caoilinn Hughes' The Orchid and the Wasp meets Andrew Lipstein's Last Resort. A smart, sexy page-turner.' – Madeleine Gray

'Work, power, passion, intimacy and vulnerabilities collide, and best of all, SMUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' – Flex Mami

'A brilliant meditation on the gap between the person we wish to be and who we actually are. I was completely gripped.' – Bridie Jabour

'An ambitious and meticulously modern fable about art, sex, money, power and the perils of self-curation.' – Gina Rushton

'Pacy, racy and high-octane, The Work delves into the volatile world of contemporary art, forcefully exposing it as a bedfellow to the world of high finance.' – Caoilinn Hughes

Bakers and cake lovers, rejoice! We are delighted to welcome sweet-toothed superstar Natalie Paull to the studio on Thursday 13th June for an in conversation evening with Jaclyn Crupi.

Natalie Paull has been baking and loving all things sweet for more than 25 years. She started cooking in professional kitchens at the age of 18 and spent her formative years working with Australian food luminaries Maggie Beer and Stephanie Alexander. Nat opened the blink-and-you'll-miss-it cult cafe and bakery Beatrix Bakes in inner-city Melbourne in 2011 to widespread acclaim. Before closing its doors in August 2022, Beatrix fans lined up in the rain in their hundreds to secure a taste of the day's ever-colourful – and delicious – offerings of perfect cakes, buns, tarts, biscuits and more.

In following her heart and baking the cakes she loves to eat, Nat has established a reputation for melding the traditional pillars of cake baking with her distinct brand of irreverent innovation. Her first book Beatrix Bakes was released in 2020 and was an instant hit. It has been reprinted multiple times and is regarded as an essential resource for aspiring and committed bakers alike. This year she released the follow up, Beatrix Bakes, Another Slice, once again to much fanfare and acclaim.

We’re overjoyed to welcome Nat to the studio for a chat with Jaclyn Crupi to talk life, cake and all things in between. Tickets also include a glass of local wine, cheese and some delicious sweet treats from both books 🍰✨.

Our friends from The Book Bird will be on hand with books to purchase and have signed on the night.

Date: Thursday 13th June
Time: 6pm-8pm
Cost: $40, includes wine, cheese and sweet treats from both books to take home or enjoy on the night.

MAY BOOK CLUB: DEMON COPPERHEAD

Join us each month for Book Club. All are welcome. Our May book is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kinsolver

Sessions commence at 6pm until 7.30 and include wine, non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks.

We encourage you to pick up a copy of the book from our fave Geelong indie bookshop, The Book Bird, they will happily offer you a 10% discount for our selected title in store.

A masterpiece in storytelling from the global bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behaviour.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2023
Winner of the 2023 Women's Prize for Fiction

Demon Copperhead is a once-in-a-generation novel that breaks and mends your heart in the way only the best fiction can. Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise. In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty and addiction aren't ideas. They're as natural as the grass grows. For Demon, born on the wrong side of luck, the affection and safety he craves is as remote as the ocean he dreams of seeing one day. The wonder is in how far he's willing to travel to try and get there. Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, Demon Copperhead is an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.

'Extraordinary.' - OPRAH

'Electrifying. . . Every sentence here sizzles.' - Daily Mail

'It's EPIC. Righteously angry, DEEPLY moving and exquisitely written.' - MARIAN KEYES

'A true highlight of 2022 fiction.' - Independent

'A fantastic read.' - EMILY MAITLIS

'Book of the Month' - Women & Home

'A masterclass.' - RICHARD POWERS

'A powerful tale.' - Good Housekeeping

'[Kingsolver] means to save us by telling us stories. . . She comes closer than anyone else I know.' - ANN PATCHETT

Cost: Tickets are $30 and include a glass of local wine or non-alcoholic drink and cheese.

About the book:

Lally has invested everything into her gallery in Manhattan and the sacrifices are finally paying off. Pat is a scholarship boy desperate to establish himself in Sydney's antiquities scene. When they meet at New York's Armory Show their chemistry is instant — fighting about art and politics is just foreplay.

With an ocean between them they try to get back to work, but they're each struggling to balance money and ambition with the love of art that first drew them to their strange industry. Lally is a kingmaker, bringing exciting new talent to the world, so what's the problem if it's also making her rich? Pat can barely make his rent and he isn't sure if he's taking advantage of his clients or if they are taking advantage of him, and which would be worse? Their international affair ebbs and flows like the market while their aspirations and insecurities are driving them both towards career-ending mistakes.
