MATTHEW EVANS & PAULETTE WHITNEY IN CONVERSATION

We are overjoyed to be welcoming two food superstars from Tasmania/Lutruwita, Matthew Evans and Paulette Whitney, to the studio on Thursday August 15th to celebrate the release of their new books. Matthew and Paulette will be in conversation with journalist, podcaster and director of the Sorrento Writers Festival, Corrie Perkin.

Matthew Evans is the founder of Fat Pig Farm, a food activist, regenerative farmer, chef, and media presenter who has written fifteen books on food and farming. His latest is MILK: The truth, the lies, and the unbelievable story of the original superfood. Matthew is renowned for breaking down complex discussions about controversial food and sustainability issues and making them compellingly relevant. A fervent believer in knowing and trusting what we eat, Matthew is as much a food activist as he is an innovator in the space.

Paulette Whitney is one of Australia’s unsung food heroes, revered by high-profile Australian growers and foodies while quietly flying under the radar. A Tasmanian market gardener & grower who runs Provenance Growers, propagating seeds, and growing plants that she sells online and at the weekly Salamanca Farmers’ Market in Hobart. Her veg has a cult following and she deserves to be celebrated.

Her first book, Broccoli and Other Love Stories is a celebration of fifty food plants with recipes, arranged into chapters by plant family and chosen because Paulette grows, cooks, and eats them regularly, with accessibility front of mind (many being suitable for container gardens for urban cooks, and most being available at grocers in temperate regions around the world) but also including a few curiosities to keep things interesting. Paulette is a beautiful writer (you will fall in love with broccoli!) and the stunning photography is shot through the seasons and celebrates the bounty.

We are so thrilled to be able to welcome them both to the studio on Thursday August 15th for a discussion about food, farming, their new books and many other topics. Tickets include a glass of local wine, shared grazing platter and maybe one or two other surprise special treats.

Our local indie bookshop The Book Bird will be on hand with books available to purchase and have signed on the night.

Date: Thursday August 15th
Time: 6pm doors open, for 6.30pm start
Location: THE KO, 1/14 Lambert Avenue, Newtown VIC 3220
Tickets: $30, includes local wine and cheese

Matthew Evans is a chef and food critic turned farmer-food activist. He lives on a mixed farm that occupies a one-time apple orchard in the Huon Valley outside Hobart.

He is nationally best known for his long-running SBS series Gourmet Farmer, set on Fat Pig Farm's 70 acres. He has authored or coauthored 15 books on food, and is regularly interviewed on radio about all things to do with farming, growing, soil and eating.

Paulette Whitney lives with her family on a pocket of land in the foothills of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington, south of Nipaluna/Hobart.

With her farmer/chef husband Matt, she grows seedlings, vegetables and seed crops. They make pickles and preserves and sell their harvest at Salamanca Market. Through their work they have nurtured relationships with herbalists, gardeners, chefs and botanists who teach them every time they talk.

Paulette can't abide wasting food, and she knows how to look for a dozen ways to use the produce that finds its way into her kitchen.
