A CHAT WITH JOSÉ RODRIGUEZ

We’re excited to share the first interview in a new series of creative chats with people working in and around the studio. We thought it only fitting to sit down with José Rodriguez of Plot Architecture & Urbanism. José and his team, Julie and Rachel, work in our onsite office at THE KO.

Could you please tell us about yourself, your business and what you do?

Yes! Well firstly, I was born in El Salvador (Central America), but Geelong has been my home for over 35 years! I’m a husband and father of two young children, Mori and Nora. I’m also a registered Architect, and the Director of PLOT Architecture & Urbanism – A Geelong based studio working across Architecture, Interior Design and Planning. Our team consists of myself, Rachel (Interior Designer) and Julie (Graduate Architect).

Can you share some information on the latest projects you’ve been working on?

Our team is currently working on the design of new homes across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Melbourne but we are particularly thrilled to have projects in Bellbrae, Lorne, and Wye River. That said, we also have renovation projects in Richmond, Collingwood and Ascot Vale which offer unique set of challenges and opportunities; narrow sites and heritage overlays just to name a couple!

Where do you look for inspiration and what is inspiring you lately?

I look for inspiration in just about everything! However, Film has always been a proven source of inspiration, but recently I’ve been inspired by contemporary dance! My wife is in Drama Theatre, so I think her work and interests have given me a greater appreciation for dance.

Can you share a book, TV show, article or podcast that you’ve enjoyed or has particularly resonated with you recently?

I really enjoy listening to the Hearing Architecture Podcast by which features professionals from within the built environment, sharing what they do, and why it's important. It’s often filled with humour and practical insights – It’s kind of a behind the scenes of Architectural practice.

What are your favourite places to eat and drink in Geelong? Best coffee spot?

The Continental (Food) and Union St Wine (Drinks), both located in Central Geelong. And for Coffee… it’s a tie between Poco Express and Coffee Cartel!

You’re heading on a day trip within an hour’s drive of Geelong, where do you choose to go?

Ok, I know this might stretch the hour’s drive bit Heidi Museum of Modern Art is always a wonderful day trip (with the kids); but if this is disqualified, anywhere along the Surf Coast will do just fine.

Can you recommend a fellow creative business you’ve worked with recently in Geelong?

I’ve worked with several creative businesses in Geelong but at the top of the list is RUCK Creative Agency over on Rutland St. Newtown; we love their creativity and passion.

Words of wisdom or advice you’ve found helpful as a creative in business?

When PLOT started up, a lot of friends and family commended the venture, and many offered lots of advice and insight. One thing that stood out then, and remains just as relevant today was the saying “You don’t know, what you don’t know “ – In other words, business is full of blind spots – so always get help and nothing wrong with asking questions!
